THE INSTAGRAM MAPS MYTH EVERYONE BELIEVED
Most people think: “If I see someone’s profile photo on a location on Instagram Maps, they’re there RIGHT NOW and sharing their live location.”
That’s not how it works.
Instagram Maps actually shows two completely different things:
- Posts with location tags – When someone posts a Story or Reel and tags a location, their profile pic shows up there for 24 hours. This is just showing content they shared, not where they are right now.
- Live location sharing – This is something you have to actively turn on. You choose specific people to share with. It’s off by default and asks for your permission twice.
So when you open Maps and see profile pictures all over the place, you’re just seeing geotagged posts. Those people didn’t turn on any special tracking – they just posted something with a location tag like they always have.
Here’s what to do instead:
The real issue isn’t the Maps feature being secretly turned on (it’s not). The issue is that a lot of us have been adding location tags to our posts without really thinking about it.
Take a minute to think about your posting habits:
→ Do you tag locations when you’re posting from home? → Do you add location tags while you’re still at that spot? → Are you tagging the same places over and over (your gym, your office, your go-to coffee shop)?
Those location tags are what show up on Maps. It’s not some hidden tracker – it’s just the location tags you’ve been adding all along. Maps just made them easier to see all in one place.
The smart approach:
Be more thoughtful about when you tag locations. If you want to tag a place, wait until after you’ve left. Or just skip the location tag altogether – your content will do fine without it.
The good news? You have way more control than you think. You just need to pay attention to what you’re sharing.
